I’m a real sucker for cliffhangers which I think is how I ended up seeing every single one of these. But I definitely think you’re right, these worked better when it was just Jigsaw and few other characters. I read through all your reviews for these and, while I largely liked and disliked the same ones, I never really thought about why, other than they just got confusing by the end. But, I agree, the smaller casts definitely left more of an impact. By the end, when there were a dozen characters in each one and in the last ten minutes they would bring someone back from a previous movie, I would be lost. Like the traps they featured, I think the best movies in this series only had a few moving parts. Once they went beyond that (like the pendulum trap you mentioned) they were just clunky.
