DEVIANT (2017) A terrible film about an important subject. There's so much right about the focus, but it's all poorly executed. Sex addiction is a real thing. For many it's a debilitating addiction as bad as any pill, powder, or alcohol. The situations the film's protagonist Jake finds himself in are powerful, scary, & ultra realistic. Problem is, the acting isn't even mediocre. The delivery of lines, aside from a couple minor players, is wooden. The screenplay's dialogue isn't great, but, again, the focus is honest. Too bad the film isn't better. Sex addiction's often treated with ridicule by those who don't understand it, so fiction, as it is with all important aspects of life, needs to help address it with a serious face to allow some the chance to better realise how badly it can destroy peoples lives. DEVIANT has its heart in the right place. The final product simply doesn't do the subject matter justice, & doesn't do much other than be unapologetically raw. Father Gore is first and foremost a passionate lover of film— especially horror. He's also a Master's candidate at Memorial University of Newfoundland with a concentration in postmodern critical theory, currently writing a thesis which will be his debut novel of literary fiction, titled Silence. He also used to write for Film Inquiry frequently during 2016-17 and is currently contributing to Scriptophobic in a column called Serial Killer Celluloid focusing on film adaptations about real life murderers. As of September 2018, Father Gore is an official member of the Online Film Critics Society.
