Father Son Holy Gore - Fear the Walking Dead - Skidmark the CatDaniel (Rubén Blades) uses Skidmark the fast cat to lure walkers from different areas and clear them out. He’s at a shopping centre. When he checks out the front doors he sees a rifle setup to blast anybody away coming through. He manages to get the keys off a zombie for a car outside. Just grab a shopping cart, a few goods, and it’s like the regular 21st century all over. Daniel’s taking out various traps in the area with only three left.
Afterwards, he goes back to the warehouse to make dinner for himself and Skidmark.

Soundtrack note: The opening sequence is set to a live recording of “Death Letter Blues” by Son House. Daniel listens to “The Sunnyland” by Dr. Ross & His Jump and Jive Boys while he sits down to eat.

Charlie (Alexa Nisenson) is putting herself to use for Strand (Colman Domingo), Sarah (Mo Collins), and Wendell (Daryl Mitchell). They’re determined to get that plane. The girl sneaks in to make sure it’s there. Then, Strand tells her to hide until Daniel leaves. Little Skidmark is meowing plenty, drawing attention to young Charlie. The girl gets in a car to stay out of sight, only to get into the one Daniel drives. Big problem— the crafty old bastard already removed the “instrument gauges.” A note’s left for Victor to call Channel 8 on the radio. Daniel also knows Charlie is in his backseat. He wants to “save her” from Strand.
Back at the rest stop, Luciana (Danay Garcia), Alicia (Alycia Debnam-Carey), and Morgan (Lennie James) have no clue the kids are tricking them. They’re taking care of Dylan (Cooper Dodson). He tells them about other people in the area. He shows them on the map. All part of the ruse?
Father Son Holy Gore - Fear the Walking Dead - Cooper Dodson and Lennie JamesIn the vehicle, Daniel and Charlie bond momentarily over Son House. At the rest stop, Luciana tells Dylan about The Little Prince— that familiar book calling back to Nick’s relationship with Charlie. Fitting that another deceptive child is now reading the book, plotting with Annie (Bailey Gavulic) and Max (Ethan Suess). He checks in with the other two, who’ve stumbled onto someone potentially very dangerous along the road.
Daniel, Charlie, and Skidmark get to another trap. The little kitty does a great job distracting while his friends try to get into the back of the store. A walker accidentally moves the machine gun and ruins everything, sending the trio off in the vehicle as the zombies crash through the storefront. Daniel wants to lead the horde to the warehouse where they can kill them. Shitty thing is, Sarah had to break down the warehouse gates to get the plane out. That leaves nowhere safe to go with the horde. Daniel decides he’ll take them on by himself, letting Charlie head for her friends with the vehicle.

Over the radio, Dylan tells Morgan and Alicia his siblings aren’t dead: “We lied.” Meanwhile, his brother and sister hide from the mysterious figure. They end up accidentally letting a blockade of zombies loose, dropping a gun in the process. Annie winds up injured. Thankfully they’re saved by Morgan and Alicia just in time, only for their saviours to find they’re at the ends of a bunch of guns held by other kids. Shit.

At the warehouse, Charlie brings the gauges. Victor calls Daniel, trying to apologise. He’s forced to admit how he kept Daniel and Ophelia apart, lying about his daughter until it “was too late.” He wants to help Daniel. So, Sarah and Wendell make good use of the SWAT vehicle to “stir up some beef,” laying waste to the horde following close behind. Err— that’s what’s supposed to happen.
Except the guns won’t fire. Strand and Charlie show up with another truck, but Daniel’s trapped. Victor leads the walkers away, turning on the plane’s propellers. OH FUCK YEAH!!! This takes the undead straight into those blades, painting the plane and the highway in guts. Leaves the big bird in a state of disrepair, too.
Father Son Holy Gore - Fear the Walking Dead - Daniel and the Zombies

“You wasted time that I did not have”

Father Son Holy Gore - Fear the Walking Dead - Nasty WalkersAnnie gets Dylan on the radio and he convinces his sister the group are trying to help. The kids lower their guns. Morgan and Alicia try to figure out about the other scary group in that area, to possibly find Al (Maggie Grace). The kids lost their parents at the other camp. They’re all alone facing whatever hideous threat lies out in the woods.

Daniel has to take care of something. He leaves his new pals and Strand at the warehouse with hot food and a place to sleep, as well as orders for Charlie to look after Skidmark. He’s got a cigar from a friend, meant to be smoked “when things get better.” In spite of heading out there by himself, he seems hopeful, as do the others.
At the rest stop, Luciana gets Strand on the radio. She hears the bad news about the plane. Dylan suggests finding inspiration in The Little Prince. In the woods, Morgan and Alicia hear a chopper. It hovers overhead. The symbol on it is the same one Al saw on the map before she was taken. BIG THEORY TIME: Could the chopper be related to the one that took Rick Grimes away on The Walking Dead? Totally unrelated? Regardless, it’s exciting, and super tense until we know who’s flying the damn thing.

“Every day brings a chance to start over,
a chance to get it right.”

Father Son Holy Gore - Fear the Walking Dead - Warehouse Dinner Table with SkidmarkAnother solid episode for Season 5. It’s going to be fun to see what’s next for Al, too. We haven’t seen her in a little while, so it’ll be good to catch up. Not only that, there’s a whole mysterious world out there, more people. Lots to enjoy.

“The End of Everything” is next time.

  1. Phil says:

Thanks for the soundtrack note. I knew Son House, of course. But I was not aware of Doctor Ross’ “The Sunnyland”. What a great track. Oh, BTW: There’s another Son House number playing when Daniel leads a herd of walkers away from his warehouse while Charlie drives off with the car. It’s called “Walking Blues” (aka “My Black Mama”).

Thanks, Phil! I forgot about that one. Loved how they used Son House in this episode. It was very fitting.
